Just a year and a half ago, the idea of a seaplane service connecting communities across Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay was just that—an idea. Today, it’s a reality. Coastal Seaplanes has become the first commercial seaplane operator in the Mid-Atlantic, showing what’s possible when determination meets vision.
Breaking Barriers
One of the most significant milestones came with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. For the first time in history, a company was granted permission to operate commercial seaplanes within the federal channels of the Elizabeth and York Rivers. This permit was more than just a regulatory checkbox, it was a breakthrough moment that laid the foundation for the seaplane infrastructure that Coastal Seaplanes has dedicated itself to building.
Building the Infrastructure
Floating docks were designed and built by hand, and long-term, exclusive leases were secured between Coastal Seaplanes and surrounding municipalities. Seaplane bases were registered and recognized. Each piece of infrastructure represented a step forward, not only for Coastal Seaplanes but for the broader future of seaplane travel in this region.
